Mike Turnbull Musician

Mike Turnbull

Mike Turnbull is a multi-instrumentalist who has the knack for writing well crafted songs with a story to tell. Influences are taken from his home region of the Lakes, around the UK & beyond.

The Valiant Knights is Mike's folk rock band with Jack Davies on drums, Rob Penrice on bass & Rob Steels on guitar/mandolin. Their sound & style is original modern folk, upbeat energetic foot stompers with a story to tell! (Think Sam Kelly and The Lost Boys, Seth Lakeman & Steve Knightly). (Dai Jeffries - Folking.com).

"Mike Turnbull is a singer-songwriter from the Lake District whose main instruments are tenor guitar, banjo, mandolin & octave mandola. Their sound coupled with the sources of his songs suggests Seth Lakeman and, in truth, that isn’t a bad comparison. He certainly has the same drive and energy."

Mike’s back catalogue of EP’s & Albums include Circlet of Gold, 2017. In so small a Compass, 2019. Courageous Tree, 2020 and Two Kingdoms, 2021. All celebrated to critical acclaim from Folking.com, FATEA, At The Barrier, Cumbria Live among others. Two Kingdoms, continues the journey of songs inspired by stories & legends from the Lakes region and beyond. Recorded at Heavy Rain Sound Studio in Kendal and produced by Andris Kiss. All tracks were recorded by Mike, with Dave Pennington on Cajon. Notable bass players were drafted in to add the bass magic needed.  These included Tim Rowe, Paul Fulker, Lukas Drinkwater and Mike himself on fretless bass.

Mike started playing bass and guitar from an early age before being involved in many bands as a songwriter-performer on guitar. Genres have included rock, pop-rock, jazz, indie-pop-rock, acoustic, roots and folk music. Now settled on modern-folk which steers gently into folk-rock, Mike is at home with his trademark tenor guitar. Other instruments include banjo, mandola, mandolin and fiddle to complement his songwriting.
